Overview Dr. Ranwala is an Associate Professor in the Academic Affairs Faculty at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC)and Associate Director for the South Carolina Clinical and Translational Research (SCTR) Institute. She received her PhD in Plant Physiology from Clemson University, and pursued post-doctoral training in the fields of carbohydrate metabolism at Cornell University, and botanical medicine at Clemson University's Institute for Nutraceutical Research where she initiated cross-disciplinary basic and clinical translational research collaborations with MUSC. She has been a co-investigator on cross-disciplinary teams that led a head/neck cancer clinical trial and studied anti-inflammatory properties of nutraceuticals on colon cancer and oral health related basic research.
In 2009, Dr. Ranwala joined the SCTR Institute, funded by an NIH Clinical & Translational Science Award (CTSA). Her primary roles within SCTR include the administration of Pilot Project Program and Team Science Program to help in developing new cross-disciplinary translational research teams to promote Science of Team Science. She has been involved in many aspects of the team science initiatives within MUSC and the national CTSA Consortium in developing Team Science education and training initiatives for the translational research teams. She is the Co-Chair for the national CTSA Institutional Readiness for Team Science Workgroup, Chair for Academic Promotion and Tenure Workgroup, Lead for the Great CTSA Team Science Contest and Chair for the Contest Judges/Judging Criteria Committee. Dr. Ranwala was recently awarded a position in the competitive Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Early Career Women Faculty Leadership Development Seminar. She has served as a faculty advisor, mentor and scholar for the MUSC Dr. Raymond S. Greenberg Presidential Scholars Program, students and staff in the interprofessional courses, Pre-doctoral (TL1) and Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) trainees promulgating the concepts of Team Science and TeamSTEPPS.
