Overview Dr. Moran graduated from Medical School and completed residency training in Internal Medicine at Georgetown University. While serving four years in the National Health Service Corp, he practiced full time at a community health center affiliated with Boston City Hospital/Boston Medical Center. He completed a Geriatrics Fellowship and received a MS in Clinical Epidemiology from Wake Forest University in 1992. After joining the faculty at Wake Forest, he was a Robert Wood Johnson Faculty Scholar and served as the Residency Program Associate Director for Primary Care. In 1997 he became chief of General Internal Medicine at Wake Forest School of Medicine, and co-director of the Center for Health Services Research and Quality. From 2001 to 2005 he served as the Clinical Director for the northwest region of Community Care of North Carolina. In 2005, he joined the MUSC faculty as McKnight Professor on Aging and Director of the Division of General Internal Medicine and Geriatrics.
His early clinical and research focus was in Geriatrics, preventive care in aging, and chronic illness management. His recent work has centered on local health system changes which support physician decision-making in clinical practice, facilitate interdisciplinary care and improve quality of care. His areas of focus include analysis of the clinical environment, coordination of the clinical teams and informatics infrastructure for the Patient-centered Medical Home.
On the national level, he is currently the President of the Society of General Internal Medicine (SGIM), and have served as president of the Association of Chiefs of General Internal Medicine (ACLGIM), and the ACLGIM and SGIM Councils. He is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians.
